The Voice of the Islands
A series of unique instruments that combine Cremonese tradition with Galicia
A PROJECT WITH SOUL
A Voz das illas is my most ambitious construction project, a declaration of intent.
It combines Cremonese tradition and acoustic study with my love for Galicia, resulting in instruments with a unique timbre and sound projection.
These instruments, inspired by the islands off the Galician coast, not only pay homage to their toponymy, but also reflect their shapes, which can be seen in the wear of the varnish, and even their colors through the use of certain dyes found on them. All of this, combined with a rigorous acoustic study and meticulous adjustments in their assembly, results in instruments with a truly unique and special tone and character.
INSTRUMENTS WITH THEIR OWN IDENTITY
Each instrument in this collection is born with its own identity, the result of a handcrafted process.
Every detail, from the choice of wood to the slightest shade of varnish, is carefully thought out to evoke the geography, atmosphere, and emotional memory of each island.
Beyond aesthetics, these pieces are built to be lived in and touched: they seek to excite not only through their form, but also through the way they respond, vibrate, and project sound.
A Voz das Illas isn’t just a series of instruments: it’s also a declaration of intent. It’s my way of paying homage to the land that inspires me and the tradition that shaped me, contributing my own, contemporary vision of Galician lutherie.
A bridge between Cremonese heritage and the Atlantic soundscape, where each violin, viola, or cello aspires to tell a story through its timbre, resonating with the voice of the place that inspired it.
INSTRUMENTS FROM THE COLLECTION
This instrument is inspired by “Illa de Medal,” a small island at the mouth of the Verdugo River, near Ponte Sampaio (Pontevedra), where the painter Antonio Medal met with great figures of the 20th century such as Castelao, Valle Inclán, and the violinist Manuel Quiroga.
The back of the violin features an aged and worn design representing the shape of the island with its bridge. Its varnish, with brownish amber tones and shades of red, evokes the sunsets seen from the island. The aged style gives it a very particular historical feel. Based on the Guarneri del Gesù 1743 “Carrodus” model, it has been ergonomically adapted to make the most of its sound potential.
